Technical Sheet: About Tobacco Cultivation for Cigars in the Recôncavo Baiano, Mata Fina Variety
The Mata Fina tobacco produced in the Recôncavo Baiano aims to provide raw material for the production of national cigars. The crops are managed by farmers on small properties; the harvesting system involves cutting the entire plant (short stalk), and depending on the climatic conditions, a few more stalk cuts may be harvested. The drying process lasts around 30 days and is always done on house porches or in specific sheds for this purpose. After being dried and bundled, the tobacco is arranged in piles to ferment under controlled temperature and humidity; the ideal curing period is 24 months. Once fermented, the tobacco is classified for use as filler, binder, or wrapper depending on its quality. The cigar factories then acquire the tobacco for cigar manufacturing. Other varieties also compose the cigar blend, such as Mata Norte, which is quite strong and aromatic, and Sumatra, especially used as wrapper.
In the case of our Quiteria Premium Cigar, the blend is as follows:
- Filler: 70% Mata Fina + 30% Mata Norte
- Binder: Mata Fina
- Wrapper: CuBra
For all sizes, the filler is long filler.
The maturation time of the cigar, at a temperature of 18-22 degrees Celsius and humidity of approximately 55% to 65%, is about 40 days before making it available for sale to the consumer.
